Matthew Edward Lonergan 1955-2021 Obituary
Matthew Edward Lonergan, age 66 years, a 20+ year resident of Elkins, WV, and recent resident of Bruceton Mills, WV, departed this life Tuesday May 18, 2021 at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, WV.
Matthew was born January 4, 1955 in Syracuse, NY, and is a son of the late Edward Lawrence and Irene Frey Lonergan. He raised seven children with Jeanette Sines Lonergan. Surviving are his children Joshua Lonergan of Elkins, WV, Zachery Lonergan and wife Brittany of Pasadena, CA, Benjamin Lonergan of Morgantown, WV, Joseph Lonergan of Morgantown, WV, Timothy Lonergan of Bruceton Mills, WV, Marybeth Lonergan of Elkins, WV, and Leah Lonergan of Elkins, WV; six siblings, Valerie Fish of Syracuse, NY, Sheila Narayanan of Reading, MA, Michael Lonergan and wife Tessa of Baldwinsville, NY, Sara Parrott and husband Joseph of Nedrow, NY, Amy McGrath and husband William of Syracuse, NY, and Colleen McConnell and husband William of Syracuse, NY; sister-in-law MaryAnn Lonergan of Syracuse, NY; and brother-in-law Bruce DiCocco of Canastota, NY. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his brothers Patrick, Mark, and Stephen Lonergan and sister Deborah DiCocco.
Matthew was a graduate of Lafayette High School in Lafayette, NY, with the Class of 1973 and received a bachelor’s degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo, NY. He worked in human resources for the majority of his life and was most recently employed at Greenfield Cabinetry in Elkins before retiring in 2020. He regularly attended Landmark Baptist Church in Elkins and was involved in many local athletic events in which his children were active. He had a love for reading, music, sports, story-telling, and road-tripping to New York, but, most of all, loved devoting time to his children and family. He is remembered for his laughter, jovial spirit, and unconditional support for those around him.
The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home in Elkins, WV on Wednesday, May 26, 2021 from 10 AM to 12 Noon. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday at May 26, 2021 at 12 Noon. The Rev. Dr. Ken Shiflet will officiate. A graveside memorial and interment will be held June 19th at 10:00 a.m., St. Mary’s Cemetery, DeWitt, NY.
