Lowell E. Alt 1914-2003 Obituary
Lowell Everett Alt, 89, of Petersburg, died Monday, Aug. 4, 2003, at Potomac Valley Hospital in Keyser.
He was born Jan. 6, 1914, near Pansy, a son of the late William Clark Alt and Elizabeth Sarah Hiser Alt.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Smith Alt on Nov. 5, 1989. He was also preceded in death by one daughter, Elizabeth “Betsy” Alt on June 5, 2002; and two brothers and six sisters.
He was the owner and founder of Alts Furniture in Petersburg in July 1950. He served several terms on the Petersburg City Council before being elected Sheriff of Grant County, serving from 1968-1972. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran serving during World War II.
Surviving are four sons, Lowell E. Alt Jr. of Salt Lake City, Utah, Michael M. Alt of Naples, Fla.; Smitty Alt of Petersburg, and Wilson M. Alt of Charlotte, N.C.; one brother, Richard Alt of Toledo, Ohio; two grandchildren, Sally Alt of Austin, Texas, and Greg Alt of Seattle, Wash.
Funeral services will be at Schaeffer Funeral Home Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Gregory A. Rotruck officiating. There will be no visitations. Interment will follow in Maple Hill Cemetery in Petersburg. Military graveside services will be provided by Combined Veteran Organizations of Grant County and the JROTC.
