Vachel Vance Cross 1935-2021 Obituary
Mr. Vachel Vance Cross, age 86, a resident of Belington, departed this life Thursday morning August 19, 2021 at his home. Death was following a period of declining health.
He was born May 22, 1935 at Philippi, WV, a son of the late Lee and Claudia Dove Delauder Cross. On September 4, 1964 he was united in marriage to the former Ruby Joan Lantz, who preceded him in death November 9, 2008.
He is survived by two daughters; Paula Campbell and husband Richard and Debbie Watson and husband Roger all of Belington, two sons; Clinton Thompson and wife Barbara and Kevin Thompson and wife Jo all of Belington. Additional survivors include several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and his K-9 companion; Max.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers, four sisters, and a son-in-law; Jimmy McLean.
Vance attended the schools of Barbour County, was a proud Veteran of the U.S. Army, and was a member of the Haven of Hope Church near Belington. He was previously employed at Upco Coal Company, Lang Bros, and Larosa Fuel Company as a heavy equipment operator. After his retirement, he then operated heavy equipment for CGP Enterprises. Vance was an avid hunter and gardener and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Friends will be received at the Haven of Hope Church near Belington on Thursday August 26, 2021 from 5:30 – 6:30 pm at which time a memorial service will be conducted from the Church with the Pastor Howard Swick officiating. Per Vance’s request cremation was honored and interment of his cremains will be in the Mt. Liberty Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the Haven of Hope Food Pantry P.O. Box 886 Philippi, WV 26416.
