Arbutus Elizabeth Carr 1915-2004 Obituary
Arbutus Elizabeth Carr, 88, formerly of Elkins Manor where she was a resident for 20 years, passed away Thursday, April 15, 2004, in the Barbour County Good Samaritan Center where she had been a resident for the past three years.
She had been in failing health since that time.
Born May 4, 1915, at Bowden, she was the daughter of the late Haymond T. and Mary Elizabeth Clayton Barkley.
In 1936, she was united in marriage to Orval Lawrence Carr, who preceded her in death on Aug. 2, 1968.
She is survived by three daughters, Melva Jean Iseli and husband, Neal, of Cumming, Ga., Mildred Ruth Slayton and husband, Ron, of Cross Lanes, and Shirley Deloris Booth and husband, Bill, of Heathsville, Va.; and two sons, Jack Carr and wife, Brenda, and Jerry Carr and wife, Carolyn, all of Elkins.
Also surviving are 12 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family and was preceded in death by two sons, Donald Lawrence Carr and James Carr; four sisters, Liza Shipley, Gertrude Cole, Laura Barkley and Artie Lambert; and four brothers, Sam Barkley, Fred Barkley, Clyde Barkley and Patrick Barkley.
She was a member of the Elkins Church of the Brethren.
She retired from the Dietary Department of Memorial General Hospital and worked for the Foster Grandparent Program for many years.
She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
The family received friends at the F.E. Runner Funeral Home after 6 p.m. Saturday.
Funeral services were conducted from the F.E. Runner Funeral Chapel at 1 p.m. Sunday.
The Rev. Larry Poling, pastor of the Elkins Church of the Brethren, and the Rev. Walter Blough, retired pastor of the Elkins Church of the Brethren, officiated.
Interment followed at the American Legion Little Arlington Cemetery at Cravensdale.
The F.E. Runner Funeral Home of Elkins was in charge of the arrangements.
