Dixie Lee Trotter Minson 1936-2013 Obituary
Dixie Lee Trotter Minson passed away Thursday, August 29, 2013 after a valiant fight with Leukemia.
She was born August 19, 1936 in Los Angeles, California to Charles Andrew Trotter and Lillian Virginia Shiflett LaPorte.
On August 25, 1952, Dixie married Ralph Thomas Minson. Their marriage was solemnized in the St. George LDS Temple on June 30, 1953. They celebrated their sixty-first anniversary just days before she passed away. She supported her husband through 20 years of military service moving around the nation and the world, and then settled in Utah for the remainder of her life.
Dixie used her time on this earth to its fullest extent. She was a mother of seven children, 45 grandchildren and 59 great-grandchildren. She was an avid genealogist that allowed her to connect over 5,000 family members with their families. Always in politics, she served four years as Weber County Republican Chairman. During that time, she received an award from President George H. W. Bush for having the best mid-size county in the country in behalf of the Republican Party.
When Governor Norman Bangeter was elected, Dixie was chosen to be the head of the Department of Consumer Protection for the State of Utah where she served until being called as the first woman commissioner in the State Industrial Commission. She was eventually appointed as Governor Bangerter’s Deputy Chief of Staff. When Dixie left state government, she joined Senator Robert Bennett’s campaign which he won. She was appointed as the Senator’s State Director where she served for eleven years. What was truly amazing was that she accomplished all of this without a college degree.
Dixie was active in the LDS Church all of her adult life, holding many positions: stake relief society presidency, ward relief society president, primary president, ward family history director and many teaching positions. She served two missions, one in Anchorage Alaska and one in Peterborough, England.
She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Dawn LeAnne Minson Lee, granddaughter Tawny Lee, great-grandson Logan Bowles, brothers Terry Wright (aka Brent Andrew Nielsen) and Dennis Wright (aka Gerald Alma Nielsen).
She is survived by her children Debra Colleen Wertz (Rodney), Scott Bradley Minson (Kitty), Kim Ilene Beus (David), Tammy Jo Minson, Ward Tyler Minson (Lisa) and Brett Randall Minson (Tonya).
She is also survived by her siblings Ronnie Wright, Maria Justice (Dan), Gene Bolton (Maxine), Aloma Carter (Wayne) and Patty Jean Wright (aka Mary Kay Nielsen Searle). This loving devoted mother and friend will be sorely missed by her family and all who knew her. We will think of you often and will be with you again soon. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 4th at 11 a.m. at the West Point Stake Center, 550 North 2300 West.
The family will meet with friends Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 North Fairfield Road and Wednesday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the church.
Interment, Hooper Cemetery.
