Carol Lynn Bailey, a resident of Clifton Heights, Pa., and Beverly, died Saturday, May 24, 2003, at Delaware County Memorial Hospital in Drexel Hill, Pa.

Mrs. Bailey was born in Croome Station, Md., and was raised in Philadelphia. She was the daughter of the late Lester and Mary Swearinger. She was a graduate of John Bartram High School.

Mrs. Bailey was a resident of Clifton Heights for the last 35 years. She has also maintained a residence in Beverly for the last seven years.

She worked for many years as a private investigator and was actively involved in the POW-MIA issue, making many trips to Washington, D.C,. on that matter.

Mrs. Bailey will be remembered for her sharp wit, humor, intellect, courage and her love and generosity to family and friends. She was an avid reader, a lover of art, music travelling, restoring her homes and genealogy.

Her family steeps with history on Mrs. Bailey’s paternal side. Her ancestors arrived in America in the 1600s. The Swearingens were some of the first inhabitants and settled in St. Mary’s City in Maryland. They also owned Canaan Valley in West Virginia. The book, “Blue Jacket, War Chief of the Shawnees,” was written by a distant cousin. On her maternal side, she was related to John Hart, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. A distant ancestor arrived from France and fought alongside of LaFayette during the Revolutionary War. Her great-uncle was the first forest ranger in the Monongahela National Forest. Her tenacious study of her heritage revealed many aspects of which she was very proud.

Mrs. Bailey was a member of the Tygart Valley Baptist Church in Beverly, and attended the First Baptist Church of Collingdale in Pennsylvania.

Mrs. Bailey was preceded in death by her mother and stepfather, Mary and Donald Brown, and two brothers, Ted and Gary Swearinger.

She is survived by her husband, Walter Bailey; her daughter, Vicki Quinlan of Wilmington, Del.; her son, Timothy Moore of Clifton Heights, Pa.; her sisters, Lois Steinmetz of Aldan, Pa., and Jean Warlow of North Carolina; her three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service for Mrs. Bailey will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Collingdale, on Clifton and Andrews Avenue in Collingdale, Pa.
