Betty Black 1934-2003 Obituary
Betty June VanPelt Black, 69, a former resident of Kelly Mountain and 915 N. Randolph Ave. and a patient in the Hopemont Hospital in Terra Alta, passed away Monday, Dec. 8, 2003, in the hospital.
She was born May 20, 1934, in Huttonsville, the daughter of the late Della G. VanPelt.
Surviving are two sons, Robert L. Black Jr. and wife, Cathy, of Mill Creek and Scott E. Black of Elkins; two daughters, Rebecca L. Sampson of Elkins and Paula Johnston and husband, Karl Michael Johnston, of Montrose; one brother, Ronald VanPelt of Huttonsville; five grandchildren, Ronald Sampson and wife, Wendi, Bryan Black and wife, Jessica, Jeb S. Black, and Lauren and Jacob Johnston; four great-grandchildren, Jesse, Damian and Bradley Sampson and Makayla Black; and several nieces and nephews.
Also preceding her in death were one son-in-law, Ronald “Pete” Sampson; and one sister-in-law, Joanne VanPelt.
Betty attended the schools of Randolph County and attended West Virginia Technical College at Institute. She was employed as a switchboard operator for the Department of Natural Resources prior to becoming disabled.
She enjoyed arts and crafts, the Elkins Flea Market and was a member of the Redman’s Club.
Friends may call from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m Thursday at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday from the funeral home chapel with Pastor Terry Burgess officiating. Interment will follow in the Hazelwood Cemetery. The Tomblyn Funeral Home of Elkins is in charge of the arrangements for Betty June VanPelt Black.
