Rheta K. Booth 1904-2003 Obituary
Rheta Keenan Booth, 99, died Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, at the Elkins Regional Convalescent Center. During the last four years, she made her home with Camilla and Will Hertig at Alpena and with Rheta and Gary Ransbottom at Glady.
Mrs. Booth was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on July 8, 1904, to Laura Deppe and Felix Patrick Keenan.
On July 18, 1926, she married Elza Fountain Booth.
They had three daughters, Patricia Ann, Camilla Fontaine and Rheta Florence. She leaves nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Elza; her daughter, Patricia; her brother, Patrick Keenan; and her sister, Florence Wright; and by her special mother, Mary Elizabeth O’Donnell.
Mrs. Booth graduated from Marshall (College) University where she played on the first women’s basketball team at that school. After graduation, she began a teaching career in Charleston.
During her teaching career she continued her education, leading to a master’s degree from Marshall. She also taught in Guyandotte and Barboursville, in Cincinnati, Ohio, and Bremerhaven, Germany.
In her lifetime, she was active in the Eastern Star, Guyandotte Garden Club and Barboursville Woman’s Club, and served as docent at the Huntington Museum of Art, and served on the board of directors of the Huntington State Hospital. She also was a lover of flowers and children.
She was a member of Kuhn Memorial Presbyterian Church in Barboursville and attended Scott Memorial Presbyterian Church in Alpena.
Cremation services were provided by Lohr & Barb Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home today from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., at which time a memorial service will be held with the Rev. Dr. David Bower officiating.
