Odbert M. Calain 1931-2003 Obituary
Odbert McCoy “Tuffy” Calain, 71, of North Avenue, Elkins, departed this life early Monday morning, Aug. 25, 2003, at his home. He had been in declining health since 1994.
He was born Sunday, Sept. 20, 1931, at Green Bank, the son of the late Charles Forest Calain and Lucille Friel Calain Ward, who survives in Elkins.
On Dec. 25, 1951, he was married to the former Othel Novella Gladden, who survives. They celebrated 52 year of marriage.
Also surviving are four daughters and one son, Lois Marie Kitzmiller and husband, Robert, of Buckhannon, Debra Lynn Bestland and husband, Greg, of Buffalo, Minn., Belinda Gay “Binky” Coberly and husband, Mike, of Elkins, Jeffrey Kerth Calain of Woodbury Minn., and Anita Rae Wright and husband, James, of Durham, N.C.; two brothers, James C. Calain and wife, Helen, of Deep Creek Lake, Md., and John F. Calain and wife, Mary, of Little River, S.C.; four sisters, Darlene Powell and husband, Stanley, of Akron, Ohio, Mildred L. Elmore and husband, Gene, of Farmington, Ohio, Barbara Brown and husband, Thomas, of Elkins, and Linda Crosston and husband, Donald, of Elkins; 15 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and one on the way.
Preceding him in death besides his father were one grandson, Samuel Levitt Kitzmiller; and one brother, Robert Calain.
“Tuffy” attended the schools of Spruce, Green Bank and Junior, and was a graduate of Belington High School in the class of 1949.
He attended Davis & Elkins College and Morris Harvey College.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and served as a staff sergeant.
He worked for the C.C. Keys Co., the Tygarts Valley Cable Co. and TCI Cable Co.
He was a former member of the Randolph County Historical Society and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Elkins where he served on the Deacon Board and as sound coordinator until his illness.
The family will receive friends at the First Baptist Church from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday.
Final rites will be conducted at the church at 2 p.m. Thursday.
The Rev. Nancy I. Stevens and Pastor Dick Gadd will officiate and interment will follow at the Mountain State Memorial Gardens at Gilman.
