H. Eugene “Gene” Tanner, 73, a resident of Townville, Pa., died Tuesday, April 22, 2003, at Meadville Medical Center in Meadville, Pa.
He was born April 25, 1929, in Meadville, the son of the late Harold O. Tanner and Anna Crosby.
On June 18, 1949, he was married to Doris Mae Carpenter, who died on June 19, 1987.
On May 18, 1989, he married Doris Galford Mook Tanner, who survives in Townville, Pa.
Surviving are one son, James Tanner and wife, Helen, of Elkins; one daughter, Debbie Tanner-Jacobs and husband, Mark Jacobs, Austin, Texas; one sister, Geraldine Betts and husband, Donald Betts Sr., Conneaut Lake, Pa.; four grandchildren, Justin Tanner, Kayla Tanner, Jessica Jacobs and Jamie Jacobs; one stepdaughter, Dr. Sharon Mook and husband, David Crawford, Avondale Estates, Ga.; one stepgrandchild, Cameron Crawford-Mook; four nieces and seven nephews.
In addition to his first wife and parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Paul Richard Tanner.
Mr. Tanner worked at the Rex Carpenter Packing Co.-Eager Beaver Lumber Co., where he worked since the age of 18 and served as president at the time of his death.
He was a competitive trap shooter and avid golfer, hunter and fisherman. He was very active in the Townville Old Home Days, especially as the meat cutter for the roast beef sandwiches and the “bingo meister” bingo caller.
He was involved in a host of community events in Townville throughout his life, where he shared his wry sense of humor and his sense of duty with his family, neighbors and friends.
He was a member and past president of the Black Ash Sportsman’s Club, past chief of the Townville Fire Department, a former Townville Boro Councilman, and a member of the Green Acres Senior Golf League in Hydetown.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran and served with the Seabees.
He was a Protestant by faith.
Friends were received Wednesday at the Willis L. Arnold Funeral Home in Townville. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at the Townville United Methodist Church. The Rev. Craig Peterson will officiate and interment will follow in the Kingsley Cemetery.
