Clifford T. VanMeter 1919-2003 Obituary
Clifford Tilden VanMeter, 84, a resident of Close Mountain Community, and more recently a resident of Donahue Street, Parsons, departed this life Monday evening, June 30, 2003, at his home. He had been in declining health and death was attributed to cancer.
He was born May 3, 1919, at Close Mountain, a son of the late Tilden VanMeter and Bertha Evans VanMeter.
On April 15, 1950, at Red House, Md., he was married to the former Bernice Ellen Knotts, who survives. They had celebrated 53 years of marriage.
Also surviving are one brother, Harold VanMeter and wife, Vonda, of Location; one sister, Bernice Knapp of Morrison, Colo.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Richard, Robert and Maurice VanMeter; and seven sisters, Vina Shaffer, Verda Price, Arna Evans, Mable Harsh, Hazel Dove, Julia Miller and Doris Matzel.
He attended the one-room school at Close Mountain. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in the European Theatre. He worked for the Department of Highways and the Libby Glass Co. at Toledo, Ohio, retiring in 1984. He was a farmer.
The family will receive friends at Barb & Greenlief Funeral Home Friday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home parlor Saturday at 1 p.m. The Rev. J. Michael Lantz and the Rev. John Morrison will officiate and interment will follow at Mountain State Memorial Gardens at Gilman.
