Lucille Ward 1906-2003 Obituary
Lucille M. Calain Ward, 97, a resident of 110 South Gate Road, Elkins, departed this life Saturday afternoon, Oct. 25, 2003, at her home. She had been in declining health for the past month.
She was born Wednesday, June 6, 1906, at Arbovale, the daughter of the late McCoy Friel and Rella S. Gum Friel. She was twice married. First, on March 26, 1930, at Green Bank, she was married to Charles Forest Calain, who preceded her in death Feb. 22, 1967. On Nov. 25, 1977, she was married to Austin J. Ward, who preceded her in death on Nov. 17, 1990.
Surviving are two sons, James C. Calain and wife Helen, of Deep Creek, Md., and John F. Calain and wife Mary, of Little River, S.C.; four daughters, Darlene Powell and husband, Stanley Jr., of Akron, Ohio, Mildred L. Elmore and husband, Eugene, of West Farmington, Ohio, Barbara Brown and husband, Thomas, of Elkins, and Linda Crosston and husband, Donald, of Elkins; one daughter-in-law, Othel N. Calain, of Elkins; three stepdaughters, Martha Gainer of Elkins, Eloise Smock of Indiana, and Patty West of Richmond, Virginia; 23 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren and a special friend, Tina Ferguson. She is also survived by one sister-in-law, Eloise James, of Avon Park, Fla.; several stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death besides her parents and husbands were one son, Odbert M. “Tuffy” Calain; one stepson, Robert Calain; three brothers, Lyle, Kerth and Paul Friel; one sister, Anna Mae Fox; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was a graduate of Green Bank High School with the class of 1923, attended Davis and Elkins College and was a graduate of New River State Teachers College, now known as West Virginia Tech.
She was a teacher and taught in the schools of Pocahontas County at the one-room schools at Spruce, Oak Hill, Pine Grove, Sunset and Raywood, and retired in 1931.
She later worked at the Main Street Grocery and the Memorial General Hospital Snack Bar.
She was a member of the Delphia Rebekah Lodge No. 62, the Randolph Chapter No. 74, Order of the Eastern Star, the Pythian Sisters No. 77, the White Shrine of Jerusalem, the Crystal Springs Club of the Randolph County Community Education Outreach Service, the Davis Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and Woodford Memorial United Methodist Church, where she had been an active member since 1959, and the Women of the Church.
Over the years, Mrs. Ward was a well-known seamstress who created everything from her children’s clothes to specialty costumes, such as majorette uniforms and wedding gowns. As a member of the Randolph County Extension Homemakers, she won first place in the county competition and second place at the West Virginia State Fair for one of her quilts. She also won a blue ribbon for one of her pine needle baskets at the West Virginia State Fair. She often contributed squares for the Forest Festival Queen’s Quilt, winning several ribbons. She was also well known for her other crafts, such as painting, basketry, shell art, ceramics, knitting and crocheting. She enjoyed teaching these crafts to her daughters and grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. today. On Tuesday morning, Mrs. Ward will be moved to the Woodford Memorial United Methodist Church, where final rites will be conducted at 11 a.m. The Rev. Dr. Daniel Bryan will officiate and interment will follow at the Mountain State Memorial Gardens at Gilman. The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to Hospice Care Corp., 929 South Davis Ave., Suite B, Elkins, W.Va. 26241 or to the Woodford Memorial United Methodist Church, 113 First St., Elkins, W.Va. 26241.
