Retha Ward 1919-2003 Obituary
Retha Virginia Chewning Ward, 93, a resident of 1216 S. Henry Ave., Elkins, passed away at 7:50 p.m. Friday, Dec. 26, 2003, in Davis Memorial Hospital.
She was born Oct. 22, 1910, at Cassity, the daughter of the late Oscar G. and Rita Rae Herron Chewning.
On Dec. 25, 1926, in Mill Creek, she married Hudson Crouch Ward, who preceded her in death.
She is survived by three daughters, Dora June Carvalho and husband, Pieter, of Elkins, Sandra Dawn Wagner and husband, Donald, of Elyria, Ohio, and Barbara Ann Shipp and husband, Joseph, of Fredericksburg, Va.
Also surviving are one brother, Thurman E. Chewning and wife, Mona, of East Dailey; and two sisters-in-law, Maida Chewning of Fisher and Kathaleen Chewning of Elkins.
Six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild also survive.
One son, Miles Edward Ward; three brothers, Orval, Gerald and Loyal Chewning; three sisters, Ruby Linger, Ola Graham and Agnes Poling; and one great-great-grandchild preceded her in death.
Mrs. Ward was an avid gardener and a member of the Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church.
Friends may call from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. today at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Dr. Basil A. Hensley officiating. Interment will follow in Elkins Memorial Gardens. The Tomblyn Funeral Home of Elkins is in charge of arrangements for Retha Virginia Chewning Ward.
