Robert B. Criss 1924-2003 Obituary
Robert Burton Criss, 82, of Route 4, Philippi, and a former resident of Chestnut Street, Philippi, passed away Friday, Nov. 28, 2003, in the Louis A. Johnson Veterans Administration Medical Center.
He was born April 29, 1921, in Philippi, the son of the late Walter Elam Criss and Eva Mae Johnson Criss.
Surviving is one sister, Laura Bella Criss of Philippi.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Mable Mary Criss, Ida Lee Moore and Bessie Mae Campbell; and two brothers, Henry Albert Criss and Harry Lee Criss.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and attended Alderson-Broaddus College for three years.
In earlier years, he worked in road construction and was a former state road supervisor for Barbour County.
He served as director of public works for the city of Philippi, was a former Nationwide Insurance agent, served as superintendent of the fairgrounds for Barbour County Parks and Recreation, was a former city councilman and served on the Philippi Sanitation Board.
Friends will be received at the Wright Funeral Home, 216 N. Walnut St., Philippi, after 2 p.m. today and until 2 p.m. Sunday, the service hour. The Rev. Lejeune Lewis and Speaker Robert “Buck” True will officiate. Interment will follow in the Mt. Vernon Memorial Cemetery with American Legion Post 44 conducting military rites. Wright Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
