Mendel Cross 1933-2003 Obituary
Mendel Cross, 70, a resident of Wabash Avenue in Belington and more recently a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in Belington, departed this life Saturday, Nov. 8, 2003, at 2:50 a.m. at the center. He had been in declining health for quite some time.
He was born April 28, 1933, at the Hunters Fork community near Belington, the son of the late Rev. Howard W. and Hazel Bennett Cross.
He is survived by one son, Fred Cross and wife, Margareta, of Montrose; three daughters, Rhonda Cross, Lara Lawrence and husband, Jake, and Lana Fowler and husband, Aaron, all of Belington; five sisters, Lorraine Cross of Canton, Ohio, Lavonda Ware and Sharon Vanover both of Minerva, Ohio, Francis Jones of Warren, Ohio, and Winona Feldman of Mansfield, Ohio; and two brothers, Brenice J. Cross of Elkins and Howard D. Cross of Minerva, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Shane Wilfong, Nick Cross, Ashley Cross, Matthew Lawrence, Katrina, Aaron Michael and Kaitlyn Fowler; five stepgrandchildren and four stepgreat-grandchildren; and his former wife, Dolly Cross of Belington.
In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by three brothers, LaJune, Verdon and Harold Cross.
Mr. Cross attended the schools of Barbour County, was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and served as a military policeman during the Korean War.
Formerly Mr. Cross worked as a Barbour County school bus driver, Belington city policeman and a heavy equiptment operator from which he retired from in 1971.
Mr. Cross was a member of the H.W. Daniels American Legion Post 29 in Elkins and a honorary member of the Belington Volunteer Fire Department and was a Methodist by faith.
Friends will be received at the Talbott Funeral Home in Belington from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. today and on Tuesday until 1:30 p.m., the funeral hour when final rites will be conducted from the funeral home parlor. The Rev. Jimmie E. Tallman will officiate and interment will follow in the Lambert Chapel Cemetery in Belington where military rites will be accorded by The American Legion Post 44 of Philippi. The Talbott Funeral Home in Belington is in charge of the arrangements for Mendel Cross.
