Philip A. Godwin Sr. 1935-2003 Obituary
Philip Allen “Buckwheat” Godwin Sr., 68, a resident of the Mt. Zion community near St. George, departed this life Monday afternoon, Oct. 20, 2003, at his home. He had been in declining health and death was attributed to respiratory failure.
He was born Sept. 3, 1935, at Parsons, the son of the late Arthur Homer Godwin and Bessie Marie Plum Godwin.
On Oct. 20, 1956, at Parsons, he was united in marriage to the former Betty Jean Ball, who survives.
Also surviving are one son, Philip Allen Godwin Jr., and wife, Lorraine, of Parsons; two daughters, Phyllis Ann Godwin of St. George, and Brenda Kay Beers and husband, Steve, of Palmyra, Pa.; one brother, Donald A. Godwin and wife, Annette, of Hershey, Pa.; three grandchildren, Lorraine Eisenhower of St. George, and Nathan Todd Beers and Lance Michael Beers, both of Palmyra, Pa.; two stepgrandchildren, Jimmy Godfrey and Michelle Godfrey; and one stepgreat-grandchild, Makayla Godfrey.
Mr. Godwin attended the Milton S. Hershey Boys School at Hershey, Pa., where he graduated with the class of 1954, studied horticulture and was an undefeated championship wrestler.
He served in the U.S. Army and the U.S. Army Reserve.
He was a welder by trade, and in 1990 retired from the H.B. Reese Candy Co.
He was a member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars and the American Legion at Campbelltown, Pa., of which he was a former treasurer. He was a member of the American Rifle Association and was an avid coin and gun collector. He was a noted outdoorsman and was a Civil War enthusiast.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home in Parsons from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today.
Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home parlor at 2 p.m. Thursday.
Pastor Pat Cassidy will officiate and interment will follow at the Parsons City Cemetery.
