Nelson Alfred Harris, 82, a resident of Route 2, Elkins, the Crystal Springs community, departed this life Sunday afternoon, June 1, 2003, at the Charleston Area Medical Center-Memorial Division at Charleston, where he had been a patient since undergoing heart surgery.

He was born Tuesday, Nov. 2, 1920, at Huttonsville, the son of the late Andrew Harris and Addie McGee Harris.

He was married at Oakland, Md., to the former Donna Mae Gibson, who survives.

Also surviving are five sons, Kenneth Nelson Harris and wife, Debbie, Chenoweth Creek community, Dennis Allen Harris and wife, Helen, Parsons, Bradford Leon Harris and wife, Paula, Gilman, Danny Walter Harris and wife, Regina, Kerens, and Benny Joe Harris and wife, Michelle, Elkins; three daughters, Eileen L. Holliday, Elkins, Eloise Sue Kelly and husband, Jerry, Beverly, and Kimberly Ann Mole and husband, Donnie, Elkins; three sisters, Carrie Butcher and Gladys Beverage, both of Elkins, and Ruby Hosey, Beverly; sixteen grandchildren, Brian N. Harris, Matthew B. Harris, Timothy A. Harris, Donald N. Mole, Angela S. Holliday, April D. Kelly, Joseph Kelly, Wesley A. Mole, Mark A. Harris, Tyler N. Harris, Nicholas J. Harris, Andrew S. Harris, Kaitlyn M. Harris, Brandon J. Harris, Heather A. Harris and Haley A. Harris; and four great-grandchildren, Courtney Harris, Trevor Harris, Samantha Harris and Levi Harris.

He was preceded in death by one infant son, Delbert Andrew Harris; one son-in-law, John W. Holliday Jr.; and two sisters, Orpha Sexon and Mary Bell Harris.

He attended the schools of Randolph County, was a veteran of World War II and served in the U.S. Army. He had worked as a diesel mechanic for Hogan’s Transfer and Storage for 27 1/2 years and retired in 1983, he was an avid NASCAR and baseball fan and was an outdoorsman.

The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home chapel at 11 a.m. Thursday. Pastor David M. Collins will officiate and interment will follow at the Brick Church Cemetery at Huttonsville, where the H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion and the Tygarts Valley Post 3647 Veterans of Foreign Wars will conduct full military rites.
