Robert Hathaway Sr. 1929-2003 Obituary
Robert Hall Hathaway Sr., of Hurricane, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, after a short illness.
He was born in Hundred, on Nov. 15, 1929, a son of the late Andrew Hall Hathaway and Ruby Agnes Hicks Hathaway.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas Hathaway; and his foster son, John Ballentine.
Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Lois Jean Billups Hathaway; one brother, Donald Hathaway of Baden, Pa.; two sons, Robert Hall Hathaway Jr. and Rodney Hathaway of Hurricane; four daughters, Karen Ward and Helen Cook of Hurricane, Nancy Drake of Scott Depot, Mary Beth Bednar of Cary, N.C.; and a foster son, Robert Elliott of Hurricane. Grandchildren and nephews also survive him.
He had lived in the Hurricane community for 46 years. He was a graduate of Davis & Elkins College and was employed for 43 years as a chemist with EMC Inc. He was a member of the Kanawha-Putnam Association for Retarded Citizens (the ARC) and helped pioneer special education programs in Putnam County in the 1960s. He had been a member of the Civil Air Patrol and a private pilot. He was a foster parent for 27 years. He had a consciousness of the underprivileged and those in need.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Allen Funeral Home Chapel, 2837 Main St., Hurricane, with the Rev. Joe Wolfe officiating. Burial will be in the Valley View Memorial Park. Friends may call today from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
