Guy Landon Hersman, 78, of Evans, departed this life Thursday, Nov. 27, 2003, at his hunting camp on Upper Dry Fork following a sudden illness.

He was born Dec. 16, 1924, in Fairmont, the son of the late Guy Aubrey and Meriam Thomas Hersman.

He was a 1946 graduate of Ripley High School and was a former oil field worker and iron worker.

He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran and served on the USS West Virginia.

He was a retired maintenance foreman from Kaiser Aluminum and Century Aluminum.

He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5501 of Ripley, the Ripley Moose, Ripley Lodge 16 AF & AM, Scottish Rite in Parkersburg and the Nemisis Temple Shrine in Parkersburg.

In recent years, he became known for his elaborate Christmas decorations. Folks would drive for miles to enjoy the lights above and around his home and lakes.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Sue Pettit Hersman; three sons, Guy Robert Hersman of Evans, Randy Hersman of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Joseph Edward Corey II of Ripley; one daughter, Shannon Gayle Hersman of Evans; one brother, Willy “Bill” Hersman of Evans; three sisters, Rosemary Archer of Evans, Ellen Whiting of Ripley and Nancy Blake of Orlando, Fla.; and five grandchildren, William Ray Hersman, Benjamin Hersman, Sally Beth Keefer, Emma Sue Corey and Chloe Elizabeth Corey.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, Gail; and a sister, Joann Lott.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the Casto Funeral Home in Evans, where funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday. A committal service with full military honors provided by Jackson County veterans’ groups will be at 2 p.m. Dec. 6 at the Otterbein Cemetery in Evans.
