Clates Zirle 1924-2006 Obituary
CLATES ZIRKLE, age 81 years, a former resident of Mabie, WV, and more recently a resident of Norton, WV departed this life Monday, August 14, 2006 at Nella’s Nursing Home.
He was born Thursday, November 13, 1924 at Cassity, WV a son of the late Gordon Zirkle and Blanch Chewning Zirkle. He was previously married to Gladys Marie Williams Zirkle who preceded him in death on April 29, 1996. He was married to Louise Nazelrod Pingley, on June 24, 1998, who survives at Norton.
Also surviving him is one daughter, Marsha Lanham and husband, Kelmar, Mabie, one son, William Bill Clates Zirkle, Jr., Mabie, four special step sons, Arnold Sutherland and wife, Connie, Dana Robert Sutherland and wife, Carolyn, all of Coalton, Larry Kenneth Sutherland and wife, Jodie, New Windsor, MD, and David Paul Pingley and wife, Robin, Moatsville, two special step daughters, Shirley Rhodes and husband, Daniel, Davis, and Connie Pingley and husband, Joel Shifman, Augusta, ME, one brother, Gordon French Zirkle, Coalton and one sister, Leota Metzenbauer, Baltimore, MD, twenty grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death besides his parents and first wife is one step son, Jerry T.O. Sutherland, five brothers, Ira Boots, Foreman Ben, Ralph, Harley, and Norvel Zirkle, four sisters, Gertrude Smith, Zelda George, Irene Wotring, and Loris Zirkle, one granddaughter, Constance Sutherland, and two great grandchildren, Gunther Wamsley and Brody Sellars.
He attended the schools of Randolph County, and he served with the Company L, 318th Infantry of the 80th Infantry Division during World War II where he was awarded the Silver Star Medal, a Purple Heart, a Combat Infantryman’s Badge, and several other awards. Mr. Zirkle had worked for Three-Fork Coal Company, Island Creek Coal Company, Valley Camp Coal Company, and Demotto Coal Company. He had retired form Pittson Coal Company. He was a member of the Rowan Memorial United Methodist Church and had also attended Kynette United Methodist Church. He had served as a trustee for the Zirkle Cemetery, was a member of the Roaring Creek Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post #5583, and enjoyed hunting, farming, gardening, and reading western novels.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins on Wednesday from 6 until 9 PM. On Thursday, August 17, 2006, Mr. Zirkle will be moved to the Rowan Memorial United Methodist Church, where friends may call from noon until 1 PM, the funeral hour. Pastor Lois Irons Kessler will officiate, and interment will follow at the Rowan Memorial Cemetery at Mabie, WV where members of the H.W. Daniel’s Post #29, American Legion and Tygart Valley Post # 3647, Veterans of Foreign Wars will conduct full military rites.
