This was a common simple receiver design used a lot in the 1950s, and would have been a good short wave receiver if a scout were to build it at the time it was published
And its a complete radio, with a front panel and bread board to mount the controls and the tube
Today these types of sets are built for same reasons they were build back in the 1950s, to experiment with tubes and to make your own radio
The tubes used are widely available today, except for specific speciallized tubes, tubes have not been made since the 1960s, but so many were made, there are still plenty of tubes available
