A basic skill that a lot of people take for granted
I did this a lot as a teenager, and kind of assumed everyone knows how to do it, My father showed me how to split trees when I was barely a teenager
As a teenager, I would cut locust trees, cut into either 8 ft sections for posts, or 10 foot section for rails, then split them down until they were about ~6 inches in diameter, and start building rail fences, I could usually find enough locust trees to build the fences, and the fences lasted for years
The bigger the trees, the more posts and rails you could get out of them, and that area had older growth trees, so they were huge trees
But this articles explains how to split logs for those who have never done it and either need to split logs now or are interested in how logs are split
While its a simple process to split logs, its very labor intensive and a great way to stay (or get) in shape
