Leona Evelyn Sines Edwards, 96, of Thomas, passed away Jan. 3, 2013, in Cortland Acres.
She was born July 1, 1916, at Canon Settlement, a daughter of the late Jasper S. and Tracy O. Purnell Sines.
Also preceding her in death were her husband, William Joseph Edwards; one brother, Arvin Sines; and seven sisters, Gladys “Luella” James, Opal Ragno, Violet Hradsky, Margaret “Louise” Bland, Velma Hymes, Mabel Sines and Eloise Sines. Leona was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Survivors include one daughter, Eloise (Milton) Evans of Thomas; two grandchildren, Brian (Denise) Evans and Michelle (Todd) Rhodes; and seven great-grandchildren, Hannah, Bethany and Zachary Evans, Evan, Lydia and Luke Rhodes and Alex Ford.
After graduating from Thomas High School, Leona moved to Pennsylvania, and later to Baltimore, Md., with two of her sisters. She met her husband and was married in 1946, lived and worked in Baltimore until they retired in 1979 and moved back to Thomas. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
Friends will be received today at Hinkle Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be Sunday, Jan. 6, at Hinkle Funeral Chapel at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Todd Rhodes officiating. Interment will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery.
