Stephen Ervin Raines II, 43, of Virginia Beach, Va., formerly of Buckhannon, died unexpectedly Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013.
He was born Nov. 5, 1969, at Buckhannon, a son of Stephen Ervin Raines of Virginia Beach, Va., and Carolyn Sue (Vincent) Raines Dean and stepfather, John W. Dean, of Lake Wales, Fla.
He resided in Buckhannon until 1981, when he moved to Big Spring, Texas, with his mother, Sue, and stepfather, John.
In addition to his father, mother and stepfather, he is survived by one son, Stephen Earl Raines of Austin, Texas; one sister, Kimberly D. Schmidt of Montrose, Colo.; two nephews, Erik H. and Zachary V. Schmidt, both of Montrose, Colo.; one stepsister, Debbie Mick and husband, Butch, of Buckhannon; and one stepbrother, Brad Dean and wife, Vicki, of Longview, Texas.
Steve excelled in sports, particularly football and was recognized as outstanding defensive tackle both his junior and senior years in high school. He graduated from Big Spring High School in 1988, and received his Bachelor of Science in physical education from Utah State University in 1997. Steve had a sharp, witty sense of humor and could brighten anyone’s day merely with his presence. He also had a mind like a steel trap, especially when it came to football statistics.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be conducted Sunday, Jan. 6, at South Buckhannon Mission at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Ed Lowther officiating.
