Virginia Brandon Davis, 99, a resident of Elkins and more recently a resident of Colonial Place for the last three years, departed this life Wednesday evening, Jan. 2, 2013, in Colonial Place.
She was born Tuesday, July 15, 1913, at Middlebourne, a daughter of the late Rev. Frank V. and Laura Zinn Brandon.
On Feb. 16, 1960, at Belington, she was married to Kenneth Howard “Happy” Davis, who preceded her in death Aug. 26, 1978.
Surviving are one stepson James A. Davis and wife, Rachel, of Elkins; five grandchildren, Jim Davis and wife, Terri, of Elkins, Dave Davis and wife, Lisa, of Elkins, Laura Chambers and husband, David, of Charlottesville, Va., John Davis and wife, Shawna, of Elkins and Cara Elkins and husband, Kevin, of Huntington; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Preceding her in death were five brothers.
She was a graduate of Bucknell University and the University of Pennsylvania. She was a retired educator having taught at Alderson-broaddus College, Belington High School, Philip Barbour High School and Elkins High School, retiring in 1973. She was a member of Delta Delta Delta, Delta Kappa Gamma International Lambda Chapter, National Education Association, West Virginia Education Association, Randolph County Education Association, Elkins Randolph County Senior Center and was a 36-year member of the board of directors of Broaddus Hospital. She was a member of First Baptist Church at Belington and attended First United Methodist Church at Elkins. She enjoyed politics, reading and researching history.
The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home Sunday, Jan. 6, at 1:30 p.m. The Rev. Dr. Basil A. Hensley will officiate, and interment will follow in Mount Vernon Cemetery near Philippi.
