Wilfred Nole Sonny McDaniel Obituary 1930-2013
Wilfred Nole “Sonny” McDaniel, 82, passed from this life Friday morning, Jan. 25, 2013, at Davis Memorial Hospital in Elkins.
Sonny was born Tuesday, Oct. 7, 1930, in Bretz, a son of the late Delbert McDaniel and Carrie Nevada Jones McDaniel.
On April 18, 1958, he was married to the former Janice Gail Judy, who survives. They had celebrated 54 years of marriage. Also surviving are two sons, Terry Lynn McDaniel and wife, Renea, of Elkins, and Keith Nole McDaniel and wife, Amy, of Parsons; three daughters, Julie Ann Conrad and husband, Phil, of Dry Fork, Robin Marie Eye and husband, Rex, of Porterwood, and Joni Rahe and companion, Teig, of Elkins.
Sonny especially loved his grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Madison McDaniel, Heather and Shane Eye, Devin and Dustin McDaniel, Brandon and Brent Conrad, and a special nephew, Michael Long of Parsons.
Sonny was the last surviving member of his immediate family having been preceded in death by five sisters, Hallie Moreland, Betty Long, Evelyn Slavin, Madeline Roberts, and Mildred Anderson; two brothers, James and Rodney McDaniel; and one granddaughter, Wendy Persutti.
Sonny enlisted in the United States Navy in 1947. He retired having served in the United States Navy and the United States Coast Guard for 23 years, and having obtained the rank of Hospital Corpsman Senior Chief Petty Officer E8. Later, he was employed with the West Virginia Department of Corrections at Huttonsville Correctional Center, where he served as lieutenant and midnight shift commander for 18 years. Upon his retirement, he worked part time for the Tucker County Sheriff’s Department.
Sonny was an avid sports fan and a faithful supporter of the Tucker County High School Mountain Lions. He enjoyed traveling to the state basketball tournament in Charleston annually. He spent many years camping in Leadmine, with special friends, Allen, Blair and Bob. He was a member of the Mt. Top Hunting Club, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 5781 of Harman, and Pythagoras Lodge 128 A.F. & A.M. of Parsons and a Methodist by faith.
Visitation will be held at Summerfield Funeral Home of Parsons on Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013, from 4 to 8 p.m. Sonny’s request for cremation will then be honored and a graveside service will follow at a later date. The family wishes to express their gratitude to the wonderful nurses at Davis Memorial Hospital and Cancer Center and to Dr. Don Fleming and Dr. James Gainer.
