Elizabeth Mapes Whitcomb, 81, a resident of Mill Creek, and a patient in the Good Samaritan Center at Belington, passed away Saturday evening, Oct. 12, 2002, in the center.
She was born May 16, 1921, in Brooklyn, N.Y., a daughter of the late Walter J. Mapes Sr. and the late Rose M. Hartigan Mapes.
In 1952, she was married to Elwood Whitcomb, who preceded her in death on Oct. 2, 1991.
She is survived by six sons, George Galloway, Cottonwood, Ariz., James Hattersley, Bricktown, N.J., John Hattersley, Lexington, Va., David Hattersley, Elwood Whitcomb and Walter Whitcomb, all of Mill Creek; two daughters, Rose Oliverio, Bricktown, N.J., and Carol Buckley of Marlboro, N.J.; two brothers, John Mapes and Matthew Mapes, both of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; one sister, Jeanne Linderwald of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; 21 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren.
Also preceding her in death were one brother, Walter Mapes; and one sister, Mary Rose Swenson.
Mrs. Whitcomb held a masters degree and was employed by the Randolph County Schools as a teacher prior to her retirement. She was a former volunteer for the Valley Unit of the Randolph County Emergency Squad.
Friends may call from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Tuesday at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Frank Long officiating. Interment will follow in the American Legion’s Little Arlington Cemetery.
