Herbert Nathan Jiggs Propst 1915-2002 Obituary
Herbert Nathan “Jiggs” Propst, 87, of Brownton, moved to heaven at 2:15 a.m. Friday, Oct. 25, 2002, in UHC Hospital following an extended illness.
He was born March 24, 1915, in Overfield, the son of the late Daniel T. Propst and Florence Bly Jenkins Propst.
On Sept. 27, 1945, he married the former Sylvia Galford, who preceded him in death on Jan. 26, 1997.
Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Randall and Carolyn Charlton, Brownton; two grandchildren, Timothy Charlton, Abingdon, England, and Amanda Charlton, Wilmington, Del.; three sisters, Oleta Bergman, San Marcos, Texas, Joanna Knight, Cleveland, Ohio, and LeEllen D’Anselmi, Clarksburg; and one brother, Everett Propst, Buckhannon.
He was also preceded in death by one grandson, William Matthew Charlton; four brothers, Carl Daniel, Dorsey S., Clarence Lee and Howard J. Propst; and four sisters, Abbie Adams, Nettie Adams, Gladys Propst and Margaret Knight.
Mr. Propst was a retired coal miner. He served in the U.S. Army 5 1/2 years and was with the First Armored Division during World War II. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 410 of Belington.
He was Church of God by faith. He enjoyed working on the construction of the Victory Valley Church at Rosemont in 1997.
Friends will be received at the Wright Funeral Home, 216 N. Walnut St. in Philippi after noon Sunday. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Patty Post officiating. Interment will follow in the Floral Hills Memorial Cemetery with American Legion Post 44 conducting military rites.
