Edgar L. “Ed” Schoonover, 85, a resident of Second Street, Elkins, passed away Saturday evening, Sept. 14, 2002, in Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, following a brief illness.
He was born June 4, 1917, in Elkins, a son of the late Henry Thomas and Beulah Taylor Schoonover.
He was married to the former Ruth Lunsford, who preceded him in death.
Surviving are one son, Gary Schoonover and wife, Ruth Lynn, of Elkins; one brother, Kenneth Schoonover of Deland, Fla.; one sister, Jean Kern of Conway, S.C.; one granddaughter, Tracye Murphy of Manasquan, N.J.; one grandson, Todd Schoonover and wife, Rebecca, of Elkins; and three great-grandchildren, Taylor Murphy and Jacob and Mason Schoonover.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Kathryn Smith, Freda Schoonover and Gazelle Shrader; and a very special nephew, Ronald “Ronnie” Schoonover, who was raised by Mr. and Mrs. Schoonover.
Mr. Schoonover was a graduate of Elkins High School and was a veteran of the Merchant Marines under the authority of the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was an employee of the Valley Supply Co. of Elkins until his retirement after 42 years of service. He was a life member of the Buckhannon Moose Lodge and the United Commercial Travelers and a member of the Grafton Elks Lodge. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Elkins.
Friends may call from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. today at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Dr. Basil A. Hensley and the Rev. Lois Kessler officiating. Interment will follow in the Israel Church Cemetery near Kerens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Faith In Action Visionary Fund, in care of First United Methodist Church, 315 Kerens Ave., Elkins, W.Va. 26241.
