James Isaac “Jim” Rhodes, 90, a resident of Glady, departed this life at 11 a.m. Friday, July 19, 2002, at his home. He had been in declining health and death was attributed to respiratory disease.
He was born Jan. 4, 1912, at New York, N.Y., a son of the late Charles Olie Rhodes and Lena Waybright Rhodes. On Aug. 6, 1933, he was married to the former Bethel Mae Vance, who preceded him in death Jan. 14, 2002. They had celebrated 68 years of marriage.
He is survived by three sons, Edward Rhodes and wife, Evelyn, Bill Rhodes and wife, Linda, and Jerry Rhodes and wife, Sandy, all of Glady; four daughters, Bonnie Bodkins and husband, Lapel, Valley Head, Shirley Thompson, Beverly, Charlott Pennington and husband, George, Harman, and Barbara Lawrence and husband, James, Dry Fork; 10 brothers, Arthur, Everett, Charles, Raymond, Earl, Forrest, Willie, Harry, Ralph and Ronald Rhodes; eight sisters, Lou, Faye, Marie, Margie, Wretha, Irene Emmagean, and Roseanna; 18 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by one son, Ira Rhodes, two brothers, McClellan and Lloyd, and two sisters, Donna and Retta.
He attended the schools of Randolph County, and was a coal miner, farmer and retired from Labcraft Corp. He was an avid outdoorsman, well known for his bear and turkey hunting and fishing. In 1998, he was inducted into the Turkey Hall of Fame. He was a member of the Glady Brethren Church.
Friends will be received at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home chapel Monday at 11 a.m. The Rev. Ron Phillips will officiate and interment will follow at the Glady Cemetery at Glady. The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to Hospice Care Corp., 629 North Ave., Elkins, W.Va. 26241.
