David Peerce Van Meter III, passed away at his home on Sunday, April 28, 2002, at the age of 83, known to many of his friends as Dave or “Porky.”
He was born at Mitchell Station, Ala., on Aug. 27, 1918, the son of the late Wilson Hopkins and Minnie Susan Smith Van Meter.
In 1927, David, his parents and a sister, Mary Sue Van Meter, who survives, moved to Petersburg, where he had resided until his death.
During World War II, he served with the Army in both the European and Pacific theaters of operation. He served as a Grant County court commissioner and a director of the Potomac Valley Bank. He was a director and twice president of Rockingham Poultry Marketing Co-op. He was a member and past president of the West Virginia Poultry Association, a director with the Southeastern Poultry and Egg Association, a committee member to both the Baltimore District and National Advisory Board of Farm Credit. He was a former member of Kiwanis and a member of the Petersburg Presbyterian Church. He was actively engaged in farming with broiler chickens and beef cattle.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, the former Martha Chenoweth.
Also surviving are one daughter, Pamela Sue Gobert, Houston, Texas; four sons, Wilson H. “Hoppy” of Petersburg, C. Sterling of Saratoga, Calif., David. P. IV, Petersburg, and Charles A. Van Meter of Boston, Mass.; one sister, Mary Sue Van Meter, Baltimore, Md., and eight grandchildren.
The body was cremated and a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Petersburg Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Bruce A. Macbeth officiating. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall following the service.
