/Martin L. Brown 1934-2002 Obituary
Martin L. Brown, 67, of Route 1, Box 305, Flemington, died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002, in Charleston Area Medical Center.
Mr. Brown was born July 22, 1934, in Flemington, a son of the late John Brown and Anna Fagler Brown.
On Sept. 13, 1958, he married Roberta Joan Allen Brown, who survives in Flemington.
Also surviving are three daughters, Dr. Virginia Brown Drislane, Pepperel, Mass., Diana L. Brown Odde, Mullica, N.J., and Anna Margaret Brown Cote, Big Rock, Tenn.; a son, David L. Brown, Grafton; a twin sister, Margaret Brown Feaster, Seattle, Wash.; three brothers, Robert M. Brown, Florida, Paul F. Brown, Flemington, and John Brown, Michigan; five grandsons, Oliver and Connor Odde, Alexander and Vincent Cote and Rory Drislane; and a stepgranddaughter, Holliann Cote.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Anna Marteny; and a brother, George Brown.
Mr. Brown was a U.S. Army veteran, serving his country as an aircraft mechanic. He was retired from Hess Oil Co. in Elkins with 14 years service, working in public relations and sales.
In the early 1900s, his parents left their home in Czechoslovakia, and settled in Flemington, where they established their family business called Flemington Ice and Bottling Works. They operated their business for years at the original site until moving to Route 1, following the Great Depression. All of the children were involved with the family business, including delivering their products by horse-drawn carriages. The name was then changed to Brown’s Beverages. He was the last immediate family member to operate the business. In recent years, their main focus was catering events, such as reunions, wedding parties and ballgames.
He was a member of Yates Lodge No. 163, AF & AM in Flemington.
Funeral Arrangements: Friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Ave., Bridgeport, Sunday from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be in the funeral home chapel Monday at 10 a.m. Interment will follow in West Virginia National Cemetery in Pruntytown, where full military services will be accorded by the Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 3081, American Legion Post 12, and the DAV Chapter 24, all of Grafton.
