Donald Johnson, 80, a former resident of Heavener Acres, passed away at 12:35 p.m. Friday, March 15, 2002, in Elkins Regional Convalescent Center, where he had been a resident for the past several weeks.
He was born Sept. 9, 1921, at Dryfork, he was a son of the late Jasper and Julia Turner Johnson.
On Nov. 24, 1945, he was united in marriage to the former Milda E. “Betty” Flynn, who preceded him in death on April 20, 1990.
Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Verl (Sharon) Simmons of Beverly, Patricia Simmons and Mrs. Michael (Charlotte) Corley, both of Elkins, and Mrs. Ricky (Roxanna) Watson of Junior; one son and daughter-in-law, Donald R. Johnson Jr. and wife, Mary of Elkins; two sisters, Mrs. Clarence (Lucille) Freeland of Palm Bay, Fla., and Mrs. Dennis (Irene) Carr of Greenup, Ky.; one brother, Dale Johnson of Big Stone Gap, Va.; eight grandchildren, six stepgrandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death besides his parents and wife were one son, Jeffrey A. Johnson; one stepsister, Peachie Wilfong; two brothers, Benson and James Wallace Johnson; one stepbrother, Grover Wilfong; and two grandsons.
Mr. Johnson attended the schools of Tucker County. He was a veteran having served with the U.S. Army during World War II.
He retired from the U.S. Forestry Service.
Friends will be received today after 6 p.m. at the F.E. Runner Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services will be conducted from the funeral home chapel Tuesday at 1 p.m.
The Rev. Lester Boylen, pastor of Faith Tabernacle of Buckhannon, and the Rev. Terry Burgess, pastor of Elkins Church of the Nazarene, will officiate.
Interment will follow in McNeeley Cemetery near Hendricks.
Full military services will be accorded at the gravesite by Tygart Valley Post 3647 VFW and the H.W. Daniels Post 29, American Legion.
