Vickie Elaine Cunningham, 45, a resident of Alpena, departed this life at 3:53 p.m. Thursday, May 23, 2002, in Davis Memorial Hospital’s emergency room. She had been in declining health for the past five months, although death was unexpected.
She was born July 2, 1956, at Elkins, a daughter of Floyd Milton “Mickey” Cunningham, who survives at Alpena, and the late Dorothy Lee Isner Cunningham.
She had never married.
Surviving are three sisters, Brenda Diane Stalnaker and husband, Jim, Point Pleasant, Amelia Louise “Amy” Van Reenan and husband, Harold, Elkins, and Sharon Lee Swecker and husband, Carl, Alpena; one sister-in-law, Adwina Jo “Wendy” Kisner Cunningham, Alpena; three nephews, Brad Swecker, Casey Cunningham and Jason Stalnaker; and one niece, Katie Jo Cunningham.
She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Claude and Edith Rouse Cunningham; her maternal grandparents, Clay and Mable Shoemaker Isner; and one brother, Kenneth Milton “Kenny” Cunningham on April 14,1999.
She was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1973 and attended West Virginia University. She was a former employee of the Randolph County Unemployment Office, was the owner and operator of the former Donuts and More Shoppe of Elkins, and at the time of her death, she was director of operations at the Randolph Center in Elkins. She was the executive secretary for Home Builders, and Elkins Electrical and Trushel Construction Co. at the Elkins office. She was past president of the Mountaineer Alliance of Days Inn and also coined the phrase “Check Out West Virginia, Check in Days Inn” which is used widely throughout West Virginia Days Inns.
Friends will be received at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home today from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Final rites will be conducted from the funeral home chapel on Sunday at 1 p.m. Pastor Terry Burgess will officiate and interment will follow at Alpena Cemetery at Alpena
