Alton Eugene “Remus” Carr, 69, a resident of Montrose, departed this life Sunday afternoon, Sept. 8, 2002, at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, following a sudden illness.

He was born Jan. 22, 1933, at Pheasant Run, a son of the late Russell Carr and Lovey Moran Carr.

On July 27, 1961, at Oakland, Md., he was married to the former Gwendolyn E. Ferguson, who survives. They celebrated 41 years of marriage.

Also surviving are one stepdaughter, Cynthia Humphrey and husband, Bill, Parsons; one sister, Mary Lou England and husband, Bob, Montrose; two grandchildren, Michele Humphrey, Cullowhee, N.C., and Dwayne Humphrey and wife, Lisa, Warsaw, N.C.; one great-granddaughter, Madison Humphrey, Warsaw, N.C.; one nephew, Harry “Sonny” Carr, Westover, who was raised as a brother to “Remus”; and several other nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death are three brothers, Russell, Vincent and Earl Carr; and one sister, Betty Oldaker.

He attended the Riverview School on Pheasant Run and the Parsons High School. He worked for the former Crosten Service State of Parsons, the Kingsford Charcoal Co. and was a heavy equipment mover for the R.H. Armstrong Co. for more than 37 years, retiring in January 1998. He was an accomplished musician and gospel singer. He performed with The Carr Trio for several years, and also played with Zion Gospel Group. He played at the Crystal Springs Jamboree at Crystal Springs. He was known for his workmanship on antique clocks and he was a Harley Davidson enthusiast.

The family will receive friends at Barb & Greenlief Funeral Home from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home parlor Thursday at 2 p.m. The Rev. David Fuller will officiate and interment will follow at the Primitive Baptist Cemetery at Montrose.
