James W. Cockerill, 82, of Route 3, Box 369, Buckhannon, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, in Holbrook’s Nursing Home in Buckhannon.
He was born Oct. 21, 1920, in Buckhannon, a son of the late George and Pearl Duke Cockerill.
On Feb. 21, 1947, he married Geraldine Harris Cockerill, who preceded him in death on Oct. 26, 1997.
Surviving are one sister, Hazel V. Beer, Lavalette; one nephew, tom Beer, Kennesaw, Ga.; and two nieces, Sandra Crutchfield, Huntington, and Jane Whitlow, Vienna.
He was a service manager for Bill Kelly’s Chevrolet. He served in the Army from Aug. 5, 1942, to Dec. 15, 1945. He received the Purple Heart, two Bronze Stars, Good Conduct and the Asiatic Pacific Medal. He worked at Curry’s Chevrolet from 1940 to 1980 and retired from the National Guard. He attended Reger Chapel United Methodist Church in Buckhannon.
Friends will be received at Poling-st. Clair Funeral Home today from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be in the funeral home chapel Sunday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. William C. Eskew Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in Buckhannon Memorial Park in Buckhannon. Buckhannon VFW Post 3663 and Frank B. Bartlett Post 7, American Legion will conduct military honors at the graveside.
