Bessie Mae Adams Loughry, 96, a resident of Parsons, and for the past seven years, a resident of Cortland Acres Nursing Home, Thomas, departed this life Sunday evening, June 23, 2002, at the nursing home.
She was born Jan. 19, 1906, at Limestone, a daughter of the late Phillip Benton Adams and Florida Mae Shaffer Adams.
On April 10, 1928, at the St. John’s United Methodist Church in Parsons, she was married to Clarence W. Loughry Sr., who preceded her in death on Jan. 8, 1995.
Surviving are one daughter, Burma Goff, Parsons; one granddaughter, Twila June Goff Hill and husband, Allen; one great-grandson, Jacob Allen Hill Jr., all of Penny Hall, Md.; and several nieces and nephews. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Preceding her in death are one infant son, Clarence Waitman Loughry Jr.; three brothers, Albert Adams, Shelby Ray Adams Sr. and Cecil Roy Adams; and two sisters, Della Pearl Adams Dumire and Evalinna Adams.
She was the mayor’s wife of the Cement Settlement at Preston County. She was a homemaker and a seamstress, and had a little sewing shop in the Cement Settlement.
She was a cook for the Manheim Cement Duster Elementary School and Cement Duster Community Methodist Church of which she was a member of the Ladies Aid Society. She was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women and the Ladies Bible class. She was also a member of the Tucker County Senior Center.
Friends will be received at Barb & Greenlief Funeral Home from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. today. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home parlor on Wednesday at 2 p.m. The Rev. John Morrison and the Rev. Leon Hevener will officiate and interment will follow at Parsons City Cemetery.
