GEORGE MANOLIDIS, age 87 years, a resident of Elkins, WV departed this life Monday morning, February 15, 2010 at the Davis Memorial Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
He was born Friday, April 7, 1922 at Elkins, WV a son of the late Christos Manolidis and Florence Lloyd Manolidis Fearon. He had never married. Surviving are two sisters, Eva Stalnaker and husband Bruce, Elkins; who cared for him and helped him in every way, Opal Menear, Bridgeport, who always kept in touch; his niece Debbie Fortney and husband Lou, Elkins; who were always there for him; other special nieces and nephews and his walking buddies, Bill, Angelo and Bill P., and his friends from McDonald’s and Hardees.
Preceding him in death are two brothers, Paul and Jim Manolidis.
George attended the schools of Randolph County, was a veteran of World War II, serving overseas with the 8th Army Air Corps in England and was on the beaches of Normandy after D-day. He was a Disabled American Veteran and performed his duties with the Honor Guard with respect and pride. He had worked for Kitzmiller Lumber Company. His love for vegetable and flower gardening was very well known and he loved to share his harvest with neighbors and friends. If you stopped by to ask him about his flowers you became a friend for life.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins on Saturday, February 20, 2010 from 12 Noon to 2 PM, the funeral hour. Pastor Joey M. Ridenour, “George’s” minister and friend, who stopped by the house and cleaned his sidewalks and road, will officiate and interment will follow at the American Legion’s Little Arlington Cemetery at Cravensdale, WV where the H. W. Daniel’s Post # 29, American Legion and the Tygart’s Valley Post # 3647, Veterans of Foreign Wars will conduct full military rites. The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to the H. W. Daniel’s Post # 29, American Legion, 326 Railroad Avenue, Elkins, WV 26241 or to Hospice Care Inpatient Center, 169 Diamond Street, Elkins, WV 26241.
