THELMA WEST DEAVERS CURRENCE, age 89 years, a resident of Elkins, WV departed this life early Wednesday morning, March 3, 2010 at the Davis Memorial Hospital. She had been in declining health for the past five years.
She was born Sunday, January 30, 1921 at Independence, Preston County, WV a daughter of the late Robert “Ray” West and Ruth Jane Andrews West. She was twice married. First on March 13, 1937 at Independence, WV she was married to Fred Lorraine Deavers, who preceded her in death February 7, 1972. Second on July 16, 1977, she was married to Kenneth Blaine “Buck” Currence, who preceded her in death July 16, 1980. Surviving are two daughters, Carol Yuvonne Fretwell and husband Sylvester; and Cheryl Lynn Collins and husband William, Elkins; one brother, Doyle West and wife Nancy, Morgantown; two sisters, Cecile Roth, WA; Joyce Nisbett and husband Ted, SC; two grandchildren, Jennifer Albee and husband Scott, Elkins; and Todd Collins, VA; four great grandchildren, Scott, Amanda, Brady and Morgan; five great great grandchildren, Aiden, Rylee, Connor, Issac and Justin.
Preceding her in death are two brothers, Edwin “Bud” and Blair West, one sister, Maxine Bland; and two grandsons, Jeffrey W. Fretwell and Ronald B. Collins.
She attended the schools of Independence and was a member of the Otterbein United Methodist Church for over fifty years. She had worked at the Morgantown Shirt Factory, the Reidboard Brothers Company and Bata Shoe Company. She loved flower gardening, and enjoyed quilting, crochet and needle point pictures. She also restored and decorated the historic Ednawood farm house at Mingo.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 4 to 8 PM, Thursday. Final Rites will be conducted at the funeral home chapel, Friday, March 5, 2010 at 12:30 PM. The Reverend Jim Murphy will officiate and interment will follow at the Mountain State Memorial Gardens at Gilman, WV.
