Mr. Paul Malcomb Pastine, age 87 years, departed this life to be with the Lord at his residence in Mill Creek, WV surrounded by family whom he loved dearly on July 14, 2011 at 7:40 AM. Mr. Pastine died after an extended illness and pneumoconiosis. Paul was born July 30, 1923 at Cassity, WV a rural mining community in Randolph County. He was the oldest and last surviving son of the late Anthony “Tony” Pastine and the late Annie Miller Pastine. He attended the schools of Randolph County and graduated from Coalton High School in 1941. He was heavily recruited by the West Virginia University Mountaineers to play basketball, but declined this opportunity due to economic times. He then went to work for Three Fork Coal Company and Middle Fork Railroad Company as a Trackman for a short period of time. In 1943, he was inducted into the U.S. Army Air Corp at Fort Hayes, Ohio. He was stationed and trained in the infantry at Fort Lee, VA. After completion of this training, Mr. Pastine served two years with the 440
Quartermaster Platoon during World War II where he was engaged in the Battle of the Bulge. After serving his country, he returned to work for Three Fork Coal Company, where he worked for several years. He later worked for Polson Rubber Company in Ohio for nine years and finally returned to work at Beth Energy Mines where he worked until he was forced to retire due to health conditions. On February 18, 1947, he was married to Zella Mae Currence Pastine who survives in Mill Creek. They were married for sixty four years. He is also survived by one daughter, Sandra Pingley and husband Michael of Myrtle Beach, SC. His only son, Malcomb Eugene Pastine preceded him in death on August 24, 1984. Also surviving are grandchildren, Shannon Jones and husband Chip of Cassity, Angela Lubensky and husband Mike of Myrtle Beach, SC, Malcomb Paul Pastine and Diana of Montrose, Candace Arbogast and husband Kevin of Myrtle Beach, SC, great grandchildren, Jacob Jones and Abby Jones of Cassity, Stormy Pastine of Montrose andTalon Michael Arbogast of Myrtle Beach. Step great grandchildren, Quentin Coffman of Montrose, Kayla Gordon of Beverly, Charles Lubensky and wife Claire of Oklahoma City, OK, Philip Lubensky and wife Jessica of Myrtle Beach, Catilyn Taylor and husband Chris of Garden City, SC, Timothy Lubensky of Myrtle Beach. Three step great-great grandchildren, Maggie Taylor of Garden City, SC, Cadence Elizabeth Lubensky of Myrtle Beach and Judah Penn Lubensky of Oklahoma City. Paul was preceded in death by four brothers, Charlie, Stanley, Richard and Russell Pastine. Surviving are three sisters including Kathryn Currence, Cassity, Joann Currence, Elkins and Virginia Zirkle of Mabie. Sisters preceding him in death were Louise Pastine, Clara Ward and Leona Wright. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Paul was a proud Veteran of World War II and loved his family very much. He loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing when his health permitted. He was a Christian by faith and has attended the Cassity United Methodist Church. He was a member of H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion and Roaring Creek Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 05583 at Coalton.
Friends may call from 7:00 PM until 9:00 PM Saturday, July 16, 2011 at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM Sunday, July 17th from the funeral home chapel with Rev. Stella Faye Moyer officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Olive Cemetery at Hemlock where full military rites will be conducted by members of H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion and Tygart Valley Post 3647 Veterans of Foreign Wars. Memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Hospice, 1600 Crim Avenue, Belington, WV 26250 in memory of Mr. Pastine.
