Jasper Burton Crawford 1922-2011 Obituary
Mr. Jasper Burton Crawford, age 89 years, a resident of Elkins, passed away Tuesday morning, March 29, 2011 in the Broaddus Hospital in Philippi.
He was born January 5, 1922 at Beverly, a son of the late Emmett B. and J. Mae Phares Crawford.
On July 1, 1960 at Winchester, VA he was married to Lillie Mae Wyatt Crawford who survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Dennis M. Crawford and wife Kelly, of Elkins, and Gary Beal, of Beverly, one brother, Alfred Crawford, of Chesapeake Beach, MD and one sister, Adelene Roach, of Elkins, three grandchildren, D.J., Daniel and Rachel Crawford all of Elkins and many nieces and nephews. Also preceding him in death were two brothers, Harold and Edward Crawford and one sister, Rosalie Crawford White.
He was a loving husband, father and loved his grandchildren.
Mr. Crawford was a Veteran of World War II, having served with the United States Army as a Private First Class.
He served as a Heavy Mortar Crewman in Normandy and Rhineland. He was a receipient of the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster and the European, African and Middle Eastern Theater Medal.
Following his injuries, he was hospitalized at Camp Pickett Virginia for eight months prior to his discharge.
He was a graduate of Davis and Elkins College and was employed as a Postal Clerk for the United States Postal Service for forty three years prior to his retirement.
Mr. Crawford was a member of Woodford United Methodist Church and Tygart Valley Post 3647 Veterans of Foreign War.
Friends may call from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Thursday, March 31, 2011 at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, April 1st from the funeral home chapel with Rev. Bill Calhoun officiating.
Interment will follow in the Mountain State Memorial Gardens near Gilman where full military honors will be accorded at the gravesite by members of H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion, Tygart Valley Post 3647 Veterans of Foreign Wars and the West Virginia National Guard Honor Guard Program.
Contributions may be made to the Woodford Memorial United Methodist Church, 113 First Street, Elkins, WV 26241 in memory of Mr. Crawford.
