Mr. William H. “Bill” Metheny, age 71 years, a resident of Elkins, passed away Tuesday, February 15, 2011 in the Elkins Regional Convalescent Center. He was born February 10, 1940 in Elkins a son of the late Clair E. Metheny and the late Sadie Coldiron Metheny. On April 2, 1968 he was married to Corlyess Carlson Metheny who survives in Elkins. Also surviving are one son, William Keith Metheny and wife Michelle L. Metheny, Elkins. One daughter, Samantha Smith and husband Don Smith, Martinsburg, WV, two brothers, Carmen Metheny and wife Jean and Steve Metheny and wife Laraine all of Elkins. Five grandchildren, Cameo J., Katyanna N. and Savannah M. Metheny, Abigail E. and Katherine A. Storch and Kit F. Smith.
Bill was a graduate of Elkins High School with the Class of 1958. A Veteran of the United States Air Force, Bill served as a cryptographer in Japan, Turkey, Viet Nam, England and Libya and was on duty during the Gary Powers U-2 incident and the Bay of Pigs Invasion. He was employed as a Sporting Goods Associate at Walmart at the time of his retirement. He enjoyed Model Railroading, fishing, his Class Reunion Committee and spending time with his grandchildren.
At the request of the deceased, his remains will be cremated. The family will receive friends from 4:30 PM until 6:30 PM Friday, February 18, 2011 at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A memorial service will be held at 6:30 PM Friday from the funeral home with Pastor Terry Burgess officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Randolph County Humane Society, PO Box 785, Elkins, WV 26241 in memory of Bill.
