Mavis Catherine Thompson, 83, a resident of Mount Liberty Community passed away peacefully, with her family at her side on Wednesday May 19, 2011 at Ruby Memorial Hospital. She was born February 2, 1928 in Junior, WV, a daughter of the late Vern L. and Ica (Bennett) Corley. She was united in marriage December 19, 1945 in Barbour County to Harold Hugh Thompson who preceded her in death April 11, 2002. Surviving are eight children: Janet Thrift and husband Michael, Ormond Beach, FL; Judith Delaney and husband Basil, Queretaro, Mexico; Gary Thompson and wife Laurel, Mount Liberty Community; Cynthia McKinney and husband Elvin “Buddy”, Summersville, WV; twins, Christopher Thompson and wife Christina, Thomasville, PA and Catherine Koontz and husband Steve, Mount Liberty Community; David Thompson, Mount Liberty Community; Donald Thompson, Gettysburg, PA; three brothers and five sisters, Carol Holbert and husband Herbert, Mt. Liberty Community; twins, Robert Corley and wife Nina, Belington and Connie Metheny, Millboro, VA; Larry Corley and wife Sharon of Union Community; Karen Ketchem of Union Community; Willis Corley and wife Aggie of Denton, KY; Marion Moore and husband Ronnie of Worthington, WV; two sisters-in-law, Carmen Corley of Union Community and Mary Corley, Philippi, WV; one brother in law, William Thompson and wife Norma, Tallmadge, OH; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Robert (Delma) Thompson, Belington, WV and Mrs. Gerl (Lurenis) Thompson, Elkins, WV; fifteen grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren and three great-great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Ernest, Vern Jr., Richard Corley and her twin Milton “Bud” and his wife Shirley; two sisters, Mary Margaret Waller and Helma Jean Corley; two grandchildren, Jeremy Delaney and Tara Robertson and one brother-in-law, Robert Metheny. She was a 1945 graduate of Philippi High School. Mrs. Thompson worked at Broaddus Hospital in Philippi and Knouse Foods in Orrtanna, PA. She was a member of the Belington congregation of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses. The family will receive friends at Stemple & Forman Funeral Home in Philippi on Saturday, May 21, from 4:00PM-7:00PM. There will be a memorial service on Sunday May 22 at 2:00PM at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Valley Bend Road, Belington, with Elder Ron Barnett Sr. officiating. Interment will be at the Grafton National Cemetery in Grafton, WV on Monday, May 23, at 9:00 AM with Elder Roland Nash and Elder Wilfred Barbosa officiating.
