Samuel Joseph “Sam” Schoonover, 73, a resident of Elkins, passed from this life Thursday, September 04, 2014 in Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown. He had been in his usual health and death was unexpected. Sam was born Saturday, March 1, 1941 in Elkins, a son of the late Ernest Schoonover and Dorothy Tripplett Schoonover. On December 10, 1973 in Oakland, MD, he married the former Anita Lynn Mullennex who survives on Chenoweth Creek Road in Elkins. Also left to cherish Sam’s memory are five children, Samantha Langione and husband Nick, Tim Schoonover and wife Leslie, Alicia Wetzel and husband Junior, all of Elkins, Patricia Gordon and husband Tom of PA and Joe Schoonover and wife Karen of NJ, four grandchildren, Ashley, Talan, Lilee and Ryder, two brothers, David “Buster” and Ernest “Pete” Schoonover of Elkins, seven sisters, Martha McKinney of OH, Rita Chapet of MD, Betty Arbuthnot of VA, Alene Chenoweth of IN, Ilene Hedrick of Elkins, Mary Ann Evans of VA and Dortha Jean Hensil of MD, several nieces and nephews, one special nephew, Kevin Hartsock who thought of Sam as a father and his faithful companion, his dog Amber. Preceding Sam in death besides his parents was one brother, Robert Schoonover and one grandson, Allen Schoonover. Sam loved to hunt and fish with his grandsons. He never met a stranger and loved to talk to people. Sam was always ready to go out of his way to lend someone a helping hand. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Sam’s request for cremation was honored.
