John David “JD” Buckhannon, of Nella’s Nursing Home in Elkins, WV went to be home with the Lord on Monday, January 6, 2014 following a hard battle with cancer. He was born March 17, 1947 in Buckhannon, WV. One of five children and half- brother born to the late Ona Pearl Halpenny Buckhannon and Carl Buckhannon. “JD” was a Baptist by faith and a firm believer in the Lord. “JD” proudly served his country by serving 18 months in the Vietnam War and was awarded the Bronze Star for his acts of heroism during combat and also worked as a steel worker by trade for many years. “JD” dearly loved all pets, specially his cats Katie, Heidie and Ajax. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one brother, Gaylord “Sonny” Buckhannon. He is survived by his wife of 1 ½ years, Virginia Gibbs Buckhannon of Point Pleasant, WV; two sisters, Carolyn Sue Bleigh of Weston, WV and Mary L. Simons of Buckhannon; one brother, Herbert Richard Buckhannon of Shinnston, WV; half brother, Donald Paul Halpenny of Bridgeport, WV and several nieces and nephews. Family and friends will be received at the Poling-st. Clair Funeral Home on Thursday, January 9, 2014 from 1-2 PM. A funeral service will be held 2 PM Thursday at the funeral home with Pastor Jerry Murrell officiating. Burial will follow in the Heavner Cemetery in Buckhannon. Upshur County Honor Guard will provide Military Honors at the graveside. Poling-st. Clair Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
