RICHARD DALE PHILLIPS, age 75 years, a resident of Elkins, WV departed this life Monday, April 4, 2011 at his home.
He was born Sunday, July 7, 1935 at Elkins, WV a son of the late Okey Phillips and Ruth L. Hinkle Cross. On September 19, 1961 at Oakland, MD he was married to the former Ruth Louise McCollam, who survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Vicki Ann Ratliff, Mill Creek, WV; four grandchildren, Zachary Adam Cain, Heather Michael Cain, Jeff Ratliff and Missy Ratliff; two nieces Linda Shultz; and Geraldine Layman, and one nephew, David Adams, all of Morgantown.
Preceding him in death are one sister, Alberta Adams; and one daughter, Bobbie Gum.
He attended the schools of Elkins and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving with the United States Marines. He was a Coal Miner for Consol and was a member of the Woodford Memorial United Methodist Church. He was a member of the H. W. Daniel’s Post # 29, American Legion and the Tygart’s Valley Post # 3647, Veterans of Foreign Wars. He very much enjoyed camping and was well known for his expertise in presenting the American Flag with the military honor guard.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 6 to 8 PM, Thursday. Final Rites will be conducted at the funeral home chapel, Friday, April 8, 2011 at 2 PM. The Rev. Dr. William E. Calhoun will officiate and interment will follow at the Brick Church Cemetery at Huttonsville, WV, where the H. W. Daniel’s Post # 29, American Legion and the Tygart’s Valley Post # 3647, Veterans of Foreign Wars will conduct full military honors.
