John Richard Courtney, Jr., age 86 of Buckhannon, WV, died Saturday, December 7, 2013 at his home. He was born July 24, 1927 in Buckhannon, a son of the late John Richard and Versie Mae Huffman Courtney. On September 15, 1946 he married Tressie Lucille Demastes who preceded him in death on January 20, 2004. In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother. Surviving are one daughter, Nancy Matteson and husband Steve of Buckhannon; two sons, Larry Courtney and wife Barbara and John D. Courtney all of Buckhannon; six granddaughters, Shawn Graham and husband Charlie of Kingwood, WV, Tracy Guild of Corona, CA, Sharla Smith and husband Shane, Kim Courtney and Johnna Sandreth and husband Jason all of Buckhannon and Heather Courtney of South Charleston, WV; two grandsons, Larry Courtney Jr. and Jon Matteson both of Buckhannon; twelve great grandchildren and two sisters. Mr. Courtney was a Coal Miner for CONSOL Energy, a member of the United Mine Workers and a member of the U.S. Marines during WWII. Friends will be received Tuesday, December 10, 2013 from 5-8 PM at the Poling-st. Clair Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held 11 AM Wednesday at the funeral home with the Pastor Jerry Murrell officiating. Burial will follow in the Heavner Cemetery in Buckhannon. The Upshur Co. Honor Guard will be conducting military honors at the graveside. Poling-st. Clair Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
