Joanna McWhorter Joanna McWhorter, 67, of Philippi, died Thursday, March 7, 2013, at her home following an unexpected illness. She was born August 29, 1945, at Philippi, a daughter of the late Dorsey Shaffer and the late Lennie Maxine (Wilmoth) Shaffer Upton. Her husband, Harley Grant McWhorter preceded her in death on October 22, 2009. Surviving are two sons, Harley G. McWhorter Jr. and Daryl E. McWhorter, both of Philippi; one daughter, Melissa Asberry, Doniphan, MO; one brother, Robert G. Shaffer and wife, Janet, Philippi; three sisters, Maxine Thompson and Ava Carper, both of Philippi, Mary Runner, Moorefield; fourteen grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by a son, Charles Allen McWhorter, by one brother, Charles E. Shaffer and by her step-father, Aubrey Upton. Mrs. McWhorter was a homemaker. Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 P.M. on Saturday, March 9, 2013, from the Stemple & Forman Funeral Home, 385 So. Main Street, Philippi. The Rev. Howard Swick will officiate. Honoring Mrs. McWhorter’s request, her remains will then be cremated. Friends may call at the funeral home beginning at 4:00 P.M. on Saturday. Arrangements were entrusted to the Stemple & Forman Funeral Home.
