Willard Samuel Shaffer, Sr. age 92 years, a resident of Elkins, passed away June 11, 2012 in the Hospice Care Regional Inpatient Center at Elkins. He was born February 19, 1920 at Albright, WV, a son of the late Jacob Thomas Shaffer and Martha Minta Nice Shaffer. On September 15, 1940, at Oakland, MD, he was married to the former Mildred Elizabeth Stemple, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Willard Samuel Shaffer, Jr. and wife Rosie and David M. Shaffer and wife Gail, all of Elkins, and five daughters, Helen L. Calain of Friendsville, MD, Martha C. Evans and husband Phares of Parsons, Barbara K. Weese and husband Gary of Glenburnie, MD, Joan H. Vance and husband Tom of Frankford, WV and Denise M. Roth and husband Terrill of Elkins. One sister, M. Viola Rexroad of Bruceton Mills, WV, nineteen grandchildren, twenty four great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren also survive. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Elizabeth R. Evans, two sisters, Ocie G. Conneway and F. Madeline Feather and one son-in-law, James Calain, Sr.
Mr. Shaffer was a veteran of WWII having served with the United States Army. He was a retired Post Master with the United States Postal Service. He was a member of the Albright Baptist Church.
Friends may call from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Thursday, June 14, 2012 at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, June 15th from the funeral home chapel with Rev. Bill Calhoun officiating. Friends and family will meet for a committal service at 2:00 P.M. Friday at the Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Preston County. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the charity of choice.
