Emmett Thomas “Wimpy” Harney, age 72, a resident of Beverly, West Virginia, passed from this life Thursday, February 24, 2012, in the Davis Memorial Hospital. Wimpy was born in Plainfield, New Jersey, May 8, 1939, the son of George Arthur Harney and Ione Sullivan Harney, who are deceased. He had never married. Wimpy is survived by his caregiver Cathy Hedrick, his sister Josephine Harney Cheche, Hazlet, NJ, and close friends Bruce and Nancy Howell of Elkins. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Georgia Harney and Ione Harney; and three brothers, George, James and William Harney. Prior to moving to Randolph County in 1974, Wimpy was employed as a laborer by the Arnold Shifflett Saw Mill in Englishtown, NJ. Wimpy was well known in the area for his continuous efforts of collecting cans along the roadway for recycling. He liked to hunt and fish, and was a fan of country music, especially that of Hank Williams, Sr. and Conway Twitty. Wimpy’s request for cremation will be honored. Visitation will be held Thursday, March 1, 2012, at the Randolph Funeral Home, 100 Meadow Lane, Valley Bend, WV, from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. A Memorial Service for Wimpy will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Reverend Forrest Campbell officiating.
